Government in office at election: The Carnell Liberal Party and Michael Moore Independent Group coalition minority government was replaced on 18 October 2001 by the Humphries Liberal Party and Moore Independents coalition minority government.
Independents: At this Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly election, the vote shown for Indepdents is the sum of votes cast for all candidates who ran for office without a registered party name or as members of the Dave Rugendyke ticket (2), the Kaine Independent Group (4) or the Paul Osborne ticket (2). There were 23 such candidates.
